Hand Piecing for Fun, Evening Star Block, taught by Susan Tennison

My grandmother pieced by hand when traveling or waiting.  It’s portable and it’s accurate.  Let’s learn to piece by hand.  Learn to enjoy this portable craft so that we can get projects finished even when we are away from our sewing machines! This is beginner level for hand piecing.

Size of Finished Project: 8” square block

Supply List:   

  • Basic Supplies: Scissors, seam ripper, thimble, note paper, pencil
  • Fabric scissors (large pair to cut out shapes, small pair for thread snips
  •  100% cotton thread – light gray or taupe will work for most fabrics
  •  Thimble, optional but very helpful
  • #10 “sharps” needles
  • Several glass-head pins
  • Needle threader (Clover brand is recommended)
  • Template Plastic
  • Art & Craft Knife with breakaway blade (also known as a “wallpaper knife”)
  • Fine-line permanent marker
  • Mechanical pencil (#2 lead)
  • Sandpaper dots (optional, but very helpful)
  • Silver or white marking pencil
  • Quilters Rule Seam Guide Ruler (7”) or other 6” or 7” rule

Quilter’s Magic Wand  (Susan will have this available for purchase in class as an option) 
  OR
Quarter Inch Ruler
  • Sandpaper Board
            OR
Manila File folder, two sheets very fine sand paper and glue stick
  •  Fabric:
1 fat fourth of accent fabric for star points
1 fat fourth of background fabric
1 fat fourth of main fabric for the center of the star
