What happens when expressive, modern improvisational piecing meets the timeless beauty of vintage textiles?
In this workshop, we'll use treasured vintage linens - think doilies, embroidered tea towels, dresser scarves, and lace - as the inspiration for a contemporary improvisational quilt. Rather than following a traditional pattern, you'll explore a series of guided techniques while creating a small piece inspired by the sample.
We'll experiment with:
● Color and fabric combinations
● Straight-line and wonky piecing
● Gentle curves
● Building and joining improvisational sections
● Thoughtfully incorporating vintage pieces into a unique modern design
Designed to be no larger than a cafeteria tray, this project is intentionally small so you can focus on learning new techniques without feeling overwhelmed...and finish this project in your lifetime! You'll leave class with a finished art quilt (or nearly finished piece), renewed confidence in improvisational piecing, and a toolbox of techniques you can apply to create more expressive, spontaneous quilts in the future!
Whether you have a box of inherited linens or discover treasures at thrift stores and antique markets, you'll learn how to give these beautiful pieces new life in a fresh, modern design.
Emma Jane has continued a family legacy of quilting for nearly 30 years. A career public school teacher, she jumped ship after having a baby in her 40s during the pandemic, and now teaches quilting for guilds, shows, and her local quilt store.
