This beautiful quilt highlights the theme of the 2008 quilt show, "A Legacy of Quilts". The Guild celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2008. We honor the accomplishments of our members and the contributions and insights of our founders. Pearls are a traditional anniversary gift for the 30th wedding anniversary. The sub-theme of the show, "Pearls of Wisdom from Our First 30 Years", inspired the name of this quilt.

Pearls of Wisdom is an original design by Barbara Barrett and Nancy Atkinson. Traditional elements from our quilting legacy are incorporated in an innovative setting with contemporary fabrics and techniques.

The central design features Snail's Trail and Compass Star blocks. Snail's Trail represents "connections". It suggests clasped hands passing on traditions and "pearls of wisdom". The small green squares are the pearls. The Compass Stars represent our mentors, founders, teachers, and all those who have guided us. A closer look reveals small Variable Star shadows that flutter in and out of focus. The center is surrounded by a winding trail of half Compass Stars and spiked Sunbursts that repeat and vary this theme.

The borders utilize several fundamental building blocks of traditional quilting. Nearly every quilter has used the Sawtooth, Square in a Square, and Variable Star blocks at some point in his or her quilting experience. The Sawtooth border cycles from light to dark values. The green background for the Square in a Square border repeats the color of the pearls. The scallop edge adds a nostalgic touch, as it echoes the curves of the snails and softens the sharpness of the stars.

Pearls of Wisdom makes a strong and dramatic color statement. The hues are very intense and the values are low contrast. The quilt is predominantly blue and rusty brown with accents of green. Most of the fabrics are batiks, and every pieced block is paper pieced. The circles in the stars are fused raw edge applique with machine buttonhole stitching. It was made in 2007 by Barbara Barrett and Nancy Atkinson with assistance from AAQG members. Quilting is by Leslie Sparks.
