AAQG Red, White and Blue Project

In 2004, under the leadership of the Austin Area Quilt Guild President, Mary Gudinas, AAQG members embarked on a project of making quilts for Operation Homefront, an organization that distributes quilts to the families of Fallen Soldiers. In May, 2005, members started making quilts and afghans for Wounded Soldiers. Quilts are regularly donated to the Wounded Warriors at the Warrior Family Support Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, TX. Quilts are also often given to family members of the Wounded Warriors who are staying in San Antonio, to support the recovery of the soldiers. In 2009, Red, White & Blue sent 16 quilts to soldiers in Mosul, Iraq, and in December, delivered 100 quilts and afghans to the Veterans Hospital, in Temple, Texas, for Christmas.

At each Austin Area Quilt Guild meeting, RWB provides fabric, backings and other supplies as needed. A good size quilt for the soldiers is an over-sized lap quilt or a twin quilt, however, any size quilt is appreciated. A guild label is provided and is attached to the back of each quilt. When donating a quilt to RWB, please indicate if the quilt is to go to Homefront or to a Wounded Soldier. This can be done by pinning a piece of paper or muslin to the quilt, indicating where you would like your quilt to go. Please be sure to sign the sheet when you check out fabric or when you turn in a quilt.

As of December, 2009, the Austin Area Quilt Guild delivered a total of 448 quilts and 76 afghans to wounded soldiers, veterans and active duty soldiers in Iraq. RWB has also donated 40 quilts to operation Homefront. These quilts provide comfort to the soldiers and their families and are in the patriotic colors of Red, White & Blue.
