Event Calendar

There is no Guild meeting scheduled for September so we can get ready for our 2010 Quilt Show and Sale "Changing Gears" on September 17-19. The show will surely be a great success because of all of the members who work on the show and enter their quilts.
All AAQG members are invited to attend.
Paula Barnes is the exclusive designer for Bonnie Blue Quilts, an online quilt store specializing in Civil War reproduction patterns and fabrics from the 1800's. Victory Star is a patriotic quilt inspired by antique quilt blocks. Pattern is provided. Note: Cut your fabric before class.
This trunk show includes the Civil War history behind each of the exclusive quilts designed by Paula Barnes for Bonnie Blue Quilts. Each of our quilts has a very interesting story which could possibly bring outburst of laughter or tears. They are sure to warm your heart.

Paula Barnes is a noted quilt designer and teacher. Over the past 19 years she has taught in the Dallas and Houston areas for quilt shops, and many guilds throughout the state of Texas. In 2004, Paula taught classes at the International Quilt Festival held in Houston, Texas.

Create the illusion of depth on your quilt! “Discharging” is the process of removing dye from fabric. Learn to control this process to create a piece with a very three-dimensional look. Create the perfect background to make a wreath of leaves “float” above the surface of your quilt. It’s okay if you haven’t learned to dye—this is a different process altogether. Absolutely for beginners—or experts. A little bit of chemistry, a little bit of magic and a whole lot of fun! Beginner level.
Boxes, both solid and hollow, appear to float in space. This optical illusion quilt is an expansion of the familiar Tumbling Blocks pattern. If you think Tumbling Blocks requires hours of tedious hand piecing or set-in seams, try this clever variation! This quilt is completely strip-pieced and easy to assemble. Subtle in just one or two color schemes, or beautiful in a wild variety of scraps. Learn the tricks of value that make this 3-D illusion work. Easy to do and lots of fun! Intermediate level.
Colleen says "Being an artist means expressing myself??and that means revealing myself. As my work matures, I find that I am putting more and more of myself and my life into my quilts. This lecture will show this progression, from my first tentative steps "outside the box" to my latest series. I'll talk about my working methods and (virtually) invite you into my studio. You might be surprised at what shows up (and what doesn't!) on the quilt surface."

All Fact. No opinion. Whether this is the first time you’ve attended Bob’s seminar or you are returning for a refresher course, this is the absolute best easy-to-understand information-packed seminar you’ll ever attend. This thread therapy session will help resolve frustrations with all type of threads and solve most problems you have experienced with threads.

Bob teaches how to distinguish quality of all types of threads including regular and decorative. Know what to look for. Learn what the labels really mean. Learn what is fact and what is fiction. Learn the pros and cons of all major thread types, thread characteristics, the importance of needle selection, and properly setting the tension for your sewing successes. Learn how to use threads successfully, regardless of the type of sewing machine you own. You won’t sleep during this seminar. Interesting and entertaining.

All AAQG members are invited to attend.
Use high contrast fabrics to piece this maze like quilt. Using the No Diamonds/No “Y” Seams technique makes it simple. Great quilt for children and adults. Four size options. Pattern included. Note: Cut your fabric before class.
Learn the ins and outs of working with silk while making a beautiful table runner, wall or lap quilt. What needles to use, how to pin, how to stop raveling, quilting examples, embellishments etc. Optional kits are available at extra cost.
Debbie will demonstrate the No Diamonds or "Y" Seam method for making traditional style quilts such as the Lone Star and Carpenter’s Wheel. She will present a trunk show and will have the related patterns offered for sale.

Honoring the traditions of our past and looking to the future of our Guild and the world of quiltmaking, the Austin Area Quilt Guild is “Changing Gears”. We are returning our show to the Palmer Events Center, a beautiful location in the heart of downtown Austin, next to Lady Bird Lake. In addition to the raffle quilt we are reintroducing a popular feature of past shows - the opportunity to purchase some of the members’ quilts on exhibit!

Originally developed as a need for warmth, quilting has evolved into a functional art form. We are “changing gears” including our past, demonstrating that quilting is as relevant today as ever, incorporating modern technology with tried and true familiar patterns as well as original works of art in fiber.
