Have you made the transition from traditionally designed quilts to ART quilts? Would you like to? Then this is the class for you.

There are two parts to every art quilt....one is the technical expertise of stitching, applique, quilting, blocking, binding. And we all continue to improve in this category simply by making work . The other side ... the ART part....is more ephemeral and esoteric perhaps, as it requires many years of questioning, risk taking and imagination to develop. Pamela has designed a three -five day program that will start the student along the road to that development. Students will hone in on the whole process of art making using a series of hands on exercises which focus on the important elements of creativity. Each morning and afternoon, the class will work on projects that address certain problems faced by every artist.

Is it possible to make 6 quilts in one day? A resounding YES as Pamela uses the small format and spontaneous creativity to bypass all the prethinking and go directly to the heart. The class will be guided through 6 important design elements by creating a small quilt that concentrates on each. The class will be FAST and fun but should nevertheless afford the student time to go beyond what can be acheived in one day on a bigger project. We will explore composition, colour, narrative, embellishment, and machine quilting in the course of the day. Look at these 15 minute compositions some students have done! Now YOU can do it!
Pamela Allen is an amazing quilt artist who is known for her use of figurative references in her fabric constructions. Pamela will present a trunk show of her creations and lecture revealing the hows, whys, and trials of her work. This former laboratory technologist quit her career and entered art school at age 30. Her development into an art quilter will be the subject of a humorous and interactive lecture.

This lecture and slide presentation deals with scrap quilts. Emphasis is placed on the importance of color, value and texture. The slides are followed by a show and tell of some of Lyn's scrap quilts and a question and answer period.
This is a slide presentation of all those handy little tricks Lyn picked up over the years of teaching. Many of these hints are ones that you will never find in your quilt books. This is Lyn's most popular lecture.
This slide lecture and trunk show examines the multifaceted designs of the fabulous marble floors of Italy. It can be easy to "miss" what's under our feet, but not in the case of the fabulous marble floors of Italy-which lend themselves to stunning patchwork. This slide lecture and trunk show is based on my book, published in Fall 2005 by C&T, which examines these multifaceted designs and, using simple techniques, puts them within reach of most quilters. These floors inspire a new approach to sampler quilts that allows secondary patterns to be explored. The distinctive bands lend themselves to use in appliqué quilts as well. The possibilities are endless.
The slide lecture is titled "The Evolution of a Quiltmaker", which includes slides of quilts that I have made from the first pathetic attempt to my most recent prize winning quilts. For the quilts that have won awards, I show slides of the design inspirations (such as the lamppost in front of the St. Louis Art Museum, mosaic floor tiles from St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, a l5th century Italian manuscript, pages out of library books, and embroidery motifs).

A vital part of the slide presentation includes the comments and critiques, both positive and negative, that I have received from contest judges for the award winning quilts. It is often encouraging for other quilters to hear that a quilt can win a top prize in a competition and still receive negative comments! Viewers can look at the slides of the quilts and decide if they agree with the positive and negative comments made by the judges.

A lecture and demonstration for all levels of quiltmaking that helps explain the quilting decision: design and pattern choices, methods of marking, how-to quilt in flowing lines, etc. Real quilts (not slides) are analyzed for a better understanding of what works in quilting patterns… as well as what does not work.

In this multi-media lecture (with PowerPoint and a trunk show of real quilts), Barb leads an exploration of the use of borders to give a quilt a finishing touch. From single to multiple border quilts, learn to respect the difference the extra effort makes. Get inspired to make an eye-catching quilt by adding a striking border ... or two or three.
Watch Barb demonstrate the “magic” of designing a quilt with computer software. You don’t have to have any computer experience to be awed by the ease of creating designs that you probably wouldn’t draft on paper! Barb has become a practiced expert in using EQ6. She will bring her computer and a video projector to demonstrate how she creates quilts that go beyond the ordinary. Barb will also bring a trunk show of quilts she has made from designs she created with EQ software.

Disclaimer: Barb is not a sales representative for Electric Quilt, though she has written three books for The Electric Quilt Company and demonstrates as well as teaches for them at national conferences.

Based on the book by Marsha McCloskey and Sharon Yenter, the Blended Quilts lecture is about learning to think about and use large scale prints in new ways. We’ll be pushing ourselves to “unlearn” what we know about contrast in quilt designs. Inspiration is taken from quilts of the early 1800s. We will be learning to choose fabrics that will work hard for us to make simple pieced designs look gloriously complex.
Cathy and John sing songs, tell stories about quilting throughout the world and Cathy shows some of her own quilts. The program has had rave reviews from well over 450 quilting events, and they are being invited back for repeat performances.
